DICKENS, Bert

Source: Greencastle Daily Banner 19 March 1924 p 1

Bert Dickens colored, passed away rather suddenly at the State Penal Farm early Wednesday morning.  The deceased was about 80 years of age.  Dickens, was a well known, local colored man. He was convicted of having intoxicating liquor in his possession several weeks ago and was sentenced to serve a short term at the Penal Farm.  Up until Tuesday, he was in fairly good health but according to reports he complained of feeling bad Tuesday evening. His condition became somewhat worse during the night but was not considered serious.  However, early Wednesday morning when an attendant took some breakfast to the sick man, he found Dickens dead.  He has suffered for years from stomach trouble it is understood. The body was brought to this city and prepared for burial. A number of relatives survive. – kbz
